Flame® 2020 contains a new machine learning-powered feature set along with a host of new capabilities bringing Flame artists significant creative flexibility and performance boosts.
The Flame Family has been trusted by the best artists for over 25 years for 2D/3D, Compositing, Editing, Keying, Tracking, and Color.

CHALLENGES

Clients expect more
As Flame artists clients expectations evolve and become more demanding, artists need to be able to adjust and modify color/grades whilst in their projects, shot to shot. It is no longer acceptable to not be able to touch color whilst in a VFX session. Artists need to efficiently capture their clients attention and get approvals, in a time sensitive environment to stay on deadline and budget.

The rise of the Streaming (OTT) vendors and meeting their requirements
Films, TV episodes and commercial spots used to be created on a predictable pace that could be planned out seasonally. But now, with lower ad revenue, huge episodic features, more places to deliver content, and independent producers distributing online, there is practically no such thing as a “season” anymore – it all has to be done, now.

Fall in tradional Ad Revenue
Traditional viewing has moved from traditional broadcast/cable/terrestrial vendors to online. This in turn has moved ad budgets from the seasonal viewing spectacles of the past to not just delivering to air but to an ever increasing number of social and online platforms all with different technical specifications.

Living in an HDR UHD World
As anyone who binge-watches shows online knows, the industry has changed and so in turn have the technical standards that clients are expected to deliver to. 4K delivery is now the norm, not the exception, with UHD and 8K not far behind.

Commoditisation is everywhere
As software has become more accessible, it has impacted the services and differentiation that clients can offer. Being able to keep more services in house, being able to say yes to the clients request and always answer the ‘911’ fix it call has become more important than ever whilst being able to keep on budget and keep the client coming back for more.

SOLUTIONS IN FLAME 2020

Creative Tools
Z Depth Map Generator— Enables Z depth map extraction analysis using machine learning for live action scene depth reclamation. This allows artists doing color grading or look development to quickly analyze a shot and apply effects based on distance from camera.
Human face Normal Map Generator— Since all human faces have common recognizable features (relative distance between eyes, nose, location of mouth,) machine learning algorithms can be trained to find these patterns. This tool can be used to simplify color adjustment, relighting and digital cosmetic/beauty retouching.
Refraction— With this feature, a 3D object can now refract, distorting background objects based on its surface material characteristics. To achieve convincing transparency through glass, ice, windshields and more, the index of refraction can be set to an approximation of real-world material light refraction.

Productivity
Automatic Background Reactor— Immediately after modifying a shot, this mode is triggered, sending jobs to process. Accelerated, automated background rendering allows Flame artists to keep projects moving using GPU and system capacity to its fullest. This feature is available on Linux only, and can function on a single GPU.
Simpler UX in Core Areas— A new expanded full width UX layout for MasterGrade, Image surface, and several Map User interfaces, are now available, allowing for easier discoverability and accessibility to key tools.
‘Manager’ for Action, Image, Gmask— Manager makes it easier for new users to learn Flame or for those wishing to teach new artists how to work in Flame. With a simplified list schematic view, Manager makes it easier to add, organize and adjust video layers and objects in the 3D environment.
Open FX Support— Flame, Flare and Flame Assist version 2020 now includes comprehensive support for industry standard Open FX creative plugins as Batch/BFX nodes or on the Flame timeline.
Cryptomatte Support— Available in Flame and Flare, support for the Cryptomatte open source advanced rendering technique offers a new way to pack alpha channels for every object in a 3D rendered scene.

Licensing
Single user Linux license offering— Linux customers can now opt for monthly, yearly and three-year single user licensing options. Customers with an existing Mac-only single user license can transfer their license to run Flame on Linux.
